Campaign
Kickoff
(4/16/09)
Mayor Wilson, Vice Mayor Hudson, and
Councilmember Livingstone held a "Campaign Extravaganza!" at
Club Sport on Wednesday night to announce their candidacies
for re-election to the San Ramon City Council. Councilmembers Perkins
and Rowley were very supportive of their fellow Councilmembers
and Wilson and all agreed that the current council makeup is
the perfect one for San Ramon.
Perkins and Rowley ran unopposed in
2007. Hudson and Livingstone had one opponent, Ellen
Rosenbluth, in 2005.
Even though no challengers appear on the horizon right
now, Hudson believes one or more opponents will run this
year.
No one has run against Mayor Wilson
since San Ramon's first Mayoral election in 2003 when former
Mayor Curt Kinney ran against Wilson. The Charter Amendment
that enabled voters to elect the Mayor, instead of having the
Mayor appointed by the City Council, limits the Mayor to four,
two-year terms.
So after the 2009 election, Mayor Wilson could be
termed-out unless a new Charter Amendment is put on the ballot
to extend or remove the term limits.
Council Meeting Recap
(4/28/09)
Parks and
Community Services Director Jeff Eorio was busy during the
first hour of the April 28, 2009 City Council meeting. The
Mayor proclaimed April 19-25, 2009 as National Volunteer Week
to Mary Rutherford. Mary received a "Champion of the
Community" award for her volunteer work with the Parks and
Recreation Department. Mary has put in 15 to 20 hours a week
as a volunteer at the Community Center for many years. She
said she does it for herself because she enjoys it, and urged
everyone to volunteer.
Eorio
presented more awards from the California Parks and Recreation
Society to David Ernest, Chair of the Parks and Community
Service Commission. Ernest thanked the staff and
volunteers. Mayor
Wilson said, "We work hard and we play hard and we deserve
this," which got a big laugh from the audience.
Eorio also
thanked Shapell Homes for supplying the bridge across Oak
Creek to connect Forest Home Farms with the David Glass
House. The bridge
was made from an old flat car used for grading of Gale Ranch
in Dougherty Valley.
It is designed to look like a bridge on the property in
a photo from 1907 but with modern safety features.
Premier
volunteer and former Mayor Pat Boom asked for volunteers for
the school program at Forest Home Farms. Boom is Grandma in the
program, which features darning socks and squeezing orange
juice to recreate the days before everything came in boxes.
Volunteers to play Grandpa and demonstrate gardening and
canning are also needed.
Boom later invited everyone to buy a shopping bag for
the San Ramon Historic Foundation at the opening of the
Farmer's Market on May 2, 2009.
Councilmember and cancer survivor
Carol Rowley asked everyone to wear purple on May 1, 2009 as
part of Paint Our Town Purple day, which will also be
celebrated at the opening of the Farmer's Market on May 2,
2009. The
American Cancer Society will have a booth at the Market with
information on the Relay for Life, a 24-hour fundraising event
at Cal High on June 27-28, 2009. Roz Rogoff announced
in Public Comment that Safe-Cat Foundation will have a booth
at the Farmer's Market with adoptable cats and kittens rescued
from local shelters.
The
Dougherty Station Library received a Commendation from the
Western Association of Schools and Libraries for the
innovative partnering of Contra Costa County, the Contra Costa
Community College District, and the City of San Ramon in
building, managing, and sharing the Library.
The Council
received an update on the TRAFFIX program, which is funded by
Measure J gas taxes to reduce congestion around schools. A study was conducted
and the most congestion is in South San Ramon at Pine Valley
Middle School, Walt Disney Elementary, and Country Club
Elementary.
The TRAFFIX
program will provide safe, secure, low cost buses to these
schools to encourage parents to stop driving their kids in the
morning and afternoon.
School start times will be tiered with Pine Valley
starting at 8 AM, Walt Disney at 8:35 and Country Club at
8:35. The plan is
to provide 10 busses for Pine Valley, 5 for Walt Disney, and 3
for Country Club.
Contract
Program Manager Aram Boyd said that testing would begin in May
with one bus, and be continued over the summer. Busses will be leased
and will not use regular School District busses, but traffic
laws for school busses would still apply. Tickets for the busses
will be available on the TRAFFIX website, www.ridetraffix.com, and the program
is expected to be in operation for the 2009-2010 school
year.
Pat Perry
gave a report on changes in fees for city services. She assured that fees
will not be raised and some will be reduced. Plans for renting out
a room at Forest Home Farm or the yard at the Glass House were
dropped because the work involved could have increased
fees. Mayor
Wilson said he wants residents "to take advantage of your
facilities." Wilson was attacked for raising fees in his run
for the 15th State Assembly District last year.
The Public
Hearing on the Lodging Registration Ordinance was continued to
May.
San Ramon
Farmers Market Opens May 2nd
(Press Release dated 4/4/09)
Unlike
any other location for a farmers market in the bay area, San
Ramon Farmers Market sits on a scenic 16-acre historic farm
overlooking I-680 on San Ramon Valley
Blvd. The farm is one of east
bay's hidden agricultural wonders.
"The market is just
a great way to bring that charm and history back to our
community," said Harv Singh, Market Director.
The market opens Saturday May 2, 2009 and runs every
Saturday, May through October, 9am to 1pm.
San
Ramon Farmers Market features 30-35 vendors offering the best
in local and organic produce including fresh seasonal fruits,
smoked salmon, cut flowers and, eggs, honey, kettle corn,
artisan food vendors including award winning olive oils,
cheese and baked goods. The market atmosphere also
boasts high quality local arts & crafts, a food courtyard
featuring French crepes, ethnic foods, Whole Foods Market
coffee and juice bar and live music from bay area emerging
musicians playing anywhere from jazz, blues, country
bluegrass, oldies, and more.
"This year, I
think customers will be pleased to see more variety, lower
prices and a greater selection of local produce . . .and some
really great music and food festivals to go with it," said
Harv Singh.
The market will be host to numerous events
hosted by Whole Foods Market including chef demos, kids day,
heirloom tomato festival and much more. Contra
Costa County Master Gardeners
will have a weekly plant clinic booth in the community garden
area where customers will be able to bring their gardening
questions to the market.
About Forest Home
Farms
Forest Home Farms dates back to 1850 and has a
rich agricultural history. It sits on a 16-acre historic site
with 21 structures. The property was owned by descendents of
Daniel Boone from 1899 until 1998, when Ruth Boone willed it
to the city in memory of her husband, Travis Moore Boone.
After Ruth Boone's death in 1998 at the age of 94, the City
expanded the memorial to include Ruth, in honor of her
generosity to the people of San Ramon and in recognition of
the contribution women made to agriculture in the San Ramon
Valley.
Parking & Pets at the
Market
There is plenty of onsite parking.
Additional parking can be found along Pine Valley
Road and at Grace
United Methodist Church. The market
organizers would like to remind customers that while we love
our pets, they are not allowed at the market due to health and
safety concerns.
Market Location
Forest Home
Farms is located at 19953 San Ramon Valley
Blvd, just south of Pine Valley
Rd between Bollinger Canyon
Rd and Alcosta
Blvd exits of I-680.
It's generally recognized as the spot where sheep dogs herd
sheep, or where that big white Victorian David Glass house
sits.

Email Update
Notices
Many of you who regularly check the
Observer find that I do not update it every day. Unlike a daily newspaper I have no
staff of reporters out gathering information and writing
stories. I try to update the Observer when something
important happens in the City, usually after a City Council
meeting or other City meeting where some issue has been
decided or proposed. New menu items will have next to them. Changes,
corrections, or additions to a story will be shown in
red. By request we are now putting the date of
the article underneath the title.
To make it even easier for you to
know when something new appears in the Observer, I will send
out an email announcement when I make changes or
additions. If you would like to sign up for this
service, please send me an email with your email address to
sanramonobserver@yahoo.com. I will not give out any email addresses, and I
will not SPAM anyone who doesn't want to receive emails from
the Observer.
